How Inuit Art Reflects the Beauty of the Creator

God, as the Creator, displays His handiwork in many ways. In the Arctic, we stand in awe of God’s physical creation. We see His glory in the beauty of a snow-covered mountain, the vibrant colours of a summer sunset, the dancing Northern Lights and the intricacies of the dainty wildflowers. Beauty begins with the Creator Himself.

In His kindness, the LORD has given people the opportunity to not only witness His physical creation but create themselves. Anytime someone composes music, paints, or invents and builds something new, that creativity ultimately reflects the One who made us. God’s creativity is reflected in Inuit art. As our team learns about the ingenious designs found in traditional tools and artwork, we praise God for the wisdom and creativity He has given to the Inuit.

For example, traditional snow goggles are made with tiny slits which protect the eyes from snow blindness caused by sunlight reflecting off the snow. The rhythmic sounds of throat singing echo the sounds of nature. The careful stitching on hand-sewn mittens, kamik (traditional boots), and hats reflects remarkable skill and patience. Beading, carving (often from soapstone and serpentine), and painting are also well-known expressions of Inuit artistry.

Our team in the Arctic continues to grow in their understanding of Inuit culture and the people they serve. Please pray for them as they learn the language and culture, that these relationships would open doors to meaningful conversations about the Creator who is the source of all beauty. Pray also that Inuit men and women would come to know Him personally and find new life in Him.
